Emergency Communities Thanks Planet Gumbo
Here’s part of what Laura Paul of Emergency Communities Y Cafe in Katrina devastated Buras, Louisiana, had to say about our show there in November 2006:
”We are fortunate to have the support of many of our work here in Louisiana, and our donated services and goods abound. But your combined gift of music and food was one of the most meaningful. In our work, we too often focus on the basic needs—food, shelter, clothing –and we forget about the needs of the spirit or only attend to them when all other work is done. Your show reminded us of what we aim to do—take care of the needs of the heart as well as those of the belly. Your organization and your performances are an inspiration. Keep singing, keep playing, and keep cooking up a storm.”
Planet Gumbo Gives a Christmas Check to The Shelter in Tallahassee
Bill and Ruth Wharton visited The Shelter in Tallahassee on Christmas night to bring $1000 from Planet Gumbo to help them meet the heavy demands of the winter season. Mel Eby, the director of The Shelter, is an amazing person with great compassion, who offers a place to stay to anyone who needs it. While they were there, he introduced the Whartons to a family of six-- a mother with her four children (two three-year old twin boys, a seven year old girl and an eleven year old girl), along with a grandmother--who were all staying in three sets of bunk beds tucked into one side of a office. They had nothing and yet they beamed with happiness. Just seeing them made the Wharton's Christmas all worthwhile.
Homeless shelters all over the country operate on limited budgets and can all use volunteers. Call one in your town and see how you can help. Planet Gumbo fixes gumbo and broccoli and fresh fruit and bread for 200 once a month. If you would like more information on how we do it, email to info@planetgumbo.org
